ELSO Advisory Board Charge
The English Language Support Office (ELSO) Advisory Board provides guidance and recommendations in relation to ELSO’s mission, goals, activities, and program sustainability, and ultimately provides advice to the Director of the Knight Writing Institute and Dean of the Graduate School. The Board also functions informally to exchange information and coordinate efforts to serve international and multilingual U.S. resident graduate and professional students.
Roles of Board Members
- Reflect the needs and interests of faculty, staff, graduate students, and professional students related to the charge of the English Language Support Office, which is to promote international and multilingual graduate and professional student success by providing writing and speaking support to international and multilingual graduate and professional students in diverse programs, from diverse linguistic backgrounds, and at diverse points in their degree programs.
- Review and suggest revisions to ELSO’s mission, goals, and outcomes to ensure they are in keeping with ELSO’s charge and effectively represent the diverse populations ELSO seeks to support
- Provide the director and faculty of ELSO with faculty/staff/graduate student/professional student perspectives on effectiveness, relevance, sustainability, and future direction of the ELSO program and activities.
- Promote ELSO activities across campus, increasing the visibility of these activities and promoting wide participation across disciplines and degree types.
Meeting Frequency
The Board meets at least four times per academic year (twice per semester). Subcommittees may be formed to focus on specific issues.
Membership Terms
Faculty/staff Board members are appointed for two-year renewable terms. Graduate student/professional student members are appointed for renewable annual terms.
Constitution of the Board
The ELSO Advisory Board is appointed and chaired by the ELSO Director. The Advisory Board includes:
- Faculty representatives from across Cornell’s graduate and professional programs
- Faculty and staff representatives of other Cornell programs charged with supporting international graduate students and scholars
- International graduate and professional student representatives of different degree types and fields
Composition
The ELSO Advisory Board strives to maintain the following composition:
- Chair: ELSO Director
- 12 graduate faculty members, with representation from each of the major colleges/schools (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; College of Architecture, Art, and Planning; College of Arts and Sciences; Cornell SC Johnson College of Business; Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science; College of Engineering; College of Human Ecology; School of Industrial and Labor Relations; Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy, Cornell Law School; College of Veterinary Medicine)
- 2-4 graduate and professional students
- 4-6 staff from relevant programs (e.g., University Career Services, International Teaching Assistant Program, Graduate Writing Service, Graduate and Professional Student Assembly, Alumni Affairs and Development, Office of Global Learning, Cornell Libraries, etc.)
