GenAI Writing Tutoring

GenAI Writing is the name of a new ELSO tutoring service. Started in fall 2025, this service is the first of its kind, offering support for using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools for writing (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot), but also providing a safe space for students and postdocs to discuss their usage and GenAI policies. Tutors can even discuss ineffective uses of GenAI, and alternatives to using the technology.

Here are some examples of what someone might do with a GenAI Writing tutor:

  • Discuss how and when to use GenAI tools.
  • Consider GenAI resources you can use (e.g., Cornell's subscription to Copilot).
  • Navigate different policies for using GenAI tools (e.g., at Cornell, for publications) and consider GenAI disclosure statements.
  • Work on specific strategies for using GenAI tools for summarizing, proofreading, analyzing a text's structure, and assessing logical development.
  • Create GenAI prompts.
  • Learn to use GenAI tools less and master writing without them.
  • Enhance your learning with GenAI.
  • Consider how you'll use GenAI long-term—how will using it now affect your education and long-term plans?

What is ELSO’s policy on using GenAI tools with students?

  • Policies on using GenAI tools for writing vary dramatically. You are responsible for knowing when and how you can use GenAI tools.
  • During your first tutoring session, we will ask you to electronically sign a document that states you will be responsible for ethical usage of GenAI. You will only need to sign this once.
  • By default, all ELSO sessions are private and will only be discussed outside of our tutoring service with your permission.
