What is GenAI & Writing tutoring service?
This service helps Cornell students and postdocs leverage GenAI tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Claude) to write more efficiently and effectively. Tutors will also help clients navigate GenAI policies to ensure they are working responsibly.
Here are some examples of what someone might do with a GenAI & Writing tutor:
- Discuss how and when to use GenAI tools.
- Consider GenAI resources you can use (e.g., Cornell's subscription to Copilot).
- Navigate different policies for using GenAI tools (e.g., at Cornell, for publications) and consider GenAI disclosure statements.
- Work on specific strategies for using GenAI tools for summarizing, proofreading, analyzing a text's structure, and assessing logical development.
- Create GenAI prompts.
- Learn to use GenAI tools less and master writing without them.
- Enhance your learning with GenAI.
- Consider how you'll use GenAI long-term—how will using it now affect your education and long-term plans?
What kind of work do clients bring to GenAI & Writing tutoring sessions?
- Class assignments
- Short writing, such as emails, bios for LinkedIn, and cover letters.
- Long writing, such as master's theses and doctoral dissertations. Also research articles and grant proposals.
- Application statements, such as statements of purpose, diversity statements, personal statements, and research statements.
- Conference presentations and proposals.
- Any other writing at any stage, from ideation to reflection.
What are ELSO's policies on using GenAI tools with its clients?
- By default, all ELSO sessions are private and will only be discussed outside of our tutoring service with your permission.
- Policies on using GenAI tools for writing vary dramatically. As a student, you are responsible for knowing when and how you can use GenAI tools.
- During your first tutoring session, we will ask you to electronically sign a document that states you will be responsible for ethical usage of GenAI. You will only need to sign this once.
- Our tutors use Cornell's subscription to Copilot, which is protected. You can access it by searching for "Cornell Copilot."
