What’s the difference between ELSO 6535 Research Paper Writing Workshop and ELSO 6565 Thesis and Dissertation Writing Workshop?

During the second set of fall courses, ELSO is offering two writing courses that may sound pretty similar: ELSO 6535 Research Paper Writing Workshop and ELSO 6565 Thesis and Dissertation Writing Workshop. What’s the difference between these courses?

First, let’s talk about what is similar between the courses. Both courses are great for writers who are currently working on a writing project, whether in the early stages (reading for literature review) or later stages (developing a draft, revising a draft). Some students want to take these courses way before they start work on a project in order to pick up on some tips. But these courses aren’t designed for this purpose. Rather, the courses introduce strategies for students to apply immediately to a current project.

Also similar is that both courses are designated as “workshop” courses, meaning that time is set aside during class for quiet writing. Thus both courses can help you make progress on a current writing project.

Further, both courses seek to create supportive communities for writers. In both courses, students meet in small groups to discuss their writing goals and progress, and to share strategies. (Students are not expected to give feedback to each other’s drafts; rather, students can use the instructor’s office hours for this.)

So which course should you take?

Why choose ELSO 6535?

  • If you are currently working on a research paper—a paper for a course, for a conference, for publication, even one that may ultimately become part of your dissertation.

  • If you want to learn more about the structure of research papers. In this course, each week, we focus on a different section of research papers and explore its structure, its function, and strategies for writing that section.

Why choose ELSO 6565?

  • If you are currently working on a thesis or dissertation proposal or chapter.

  • If you want to learn from other thesis and dissertation writers. Each week, we explore a question related to thesis and dissertation writing, a question developed by students enrolled in the course.

  • If you have already taken ELSO 6535 and now are primarily seeking writing community and structured time for writing.

  • If you took ELSO 6565 in the past and benefitted from its structure. (Students may repeat ELSO 6565 for credit.)

Still unsure which course which course to choose? You are welcome to meet with me, as I am teaching both courses this semester. Contact me to request a meeting.
