Sam Aruiza is a second-year Brooks Fellow Master of Public Administration (MPA) student at Cornell's Jeb Brooks School of Public Policy. Originally from California, Sam speaks English, Spanish, and Bisaya and studies other Filipino languages Tagalog and Pangasinense. As an ELSO Tutor, Sam enjoys getting to know each client personally and targets their pronunciation built around their specific interests. She has been with ELSO for one year and offers in-person sessions. She enjoys tutoring in-person because of the face to face connection and the opportunity to meet people from all around Cornell. Her strengths as a tutor include scenario practice, vowel and consonant work, and sentence practice.
She has her Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara with minor in Poverty, Inequality, and Social Justice in 2021. Sam also is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer from the Philippines, where she worked in human trafficking prevention and survivor reintegration and aftercare. As a volunteer she worked directly with youth to improve their English confidence and reading comprehension.
While at Cornell, Sam is working on internationally focused development projects at the intersection between public health and social services. She is completing her capstone in the Philippines conducting programmatic evaluation for nonprofits. In her spare time, Sam enjoys practicing karate and Muay Thai, visiting the beach back in California, traveling the world, and playing board games with friends and family.
