Seats are still available for ELSO 6500: Strategies for Writing with AI, which begins on October 14. Register through Cornell’s Student Center.
Designed by Dr. Nathan Lindberg, this class helps students write more effectively, efficiently, and responsibly with AI chatbots (e.g., Copilot) while becoming better writers.
In the course, Dr. Lindberg breaks the writing process into stages; then he and students share ideas about how AI can be applied at each stage. Students will experiment with applying AI. Afterwards, everyone will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of applications.
A simple example is looking for errors in the final draft of a paper. One approach would be to have a chatbot rewrite the paper, making improvements it deems beneficial. This might work for a quick email, such as asking for a refund for an online purchase, but it can be dangerous for academic work because it might make unwanted changes. Another approach would be to have a chatbot make a table of what it deems to be errors, explain what those errors are, and then give suggestions for corrections. Then the author can decide what suggestions to use and which not to. This is a much slower process but ensures control over a paper, which is crucial in academic writing.
The course is 1 credit and pass/fail. Classes take place from 2:55–4:10 on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Human Ecology Building, room 201. There is a cap of 15 students.
