If you tell a chatbot to “make my writing better,” it may make improvements, but it also might make mistakes and change your style (i.e., voice).
Always be wary of giving AI control over your writing.
Instead, ask AI to list suggestions. Then you can look through the list and decide which suggestions you want to incorporate. This way you not only retain agency over your text, but you will continue to learn and grow as a writer.
Below is a sample prompt for proofreading a paper. This one makes a table, which lists possible errors, explanations for the errors, and suggestions for correcting errors.
Prompt:
For my paper, make a table of errors. In column 1, list errors. Only list concrete, grammatical errors. Do not comment on style issues. In column 2, very briefly explain what the problem is. In column 3, suggest how the text could be rewritten. Then list the total number of errors that you found.
